Making the transition from a simple hobby to a full-fledged business is no easy task, but it certainly is doable with the right frame of mind and enough effort. Many spend years developing their skills on themselves, as well as trying on friends and family to perfect their craft before taking it out into the world for business.
So what do I need to start building an MUA Kit?
A good recommendation is to purchase several clear makeup bags to store each category of makeup, for example, face, eyes, lips. By using clear bags, you can quickly and easily organise/find your makeup. Not only this, but they’re quite easy to clean as well!
Brushes
Before you start to think about the products you want to apply, think about how you’re going to apply them. Get yourself a good set of brushes and make sure to also buy a good antiseptic cleaner to ensure you keep your clients safe.
Disposable spoolies are also a great staple for your MUA kit, as they can be used for both the eyes and the brows and can be thrown out after use (to avoid transferring anything between clients). There are an array of options available online for these, as well as eco-friendly ones so you can help the environment.
Then, you want to think about how you would usually do your own makeup, the type of products you use etc. This will give a good indicator of what you would want for your clients!
Face
Most would agree that a good foundation is key to a great makeup look – but remember, price doesn’t always equal quality! Make sure to conduct your own research into brands you are looking to purchase from and make educated decisions before buying.
While you may think you need to buy every single shade of foundation/concealer ‘just in case’, you can make this more economical by only purchasing the lightest, medium and darkest for each undertone – and then mixing to create the perfect shade for each client! This way you don’t need to break the bank getting a full collection while you build up a client base.
After that, you’ll probably want to look at getting some powders for setting, contouring and blushing the client. A good way to combat buying multiple different items is to buy a palette that contains them all! A lot of brands offer conceal and contour palettes for a variety of skin shades – such as light to medium, or medium to dark. Or even like this palette, which has 40 different powders for setting, highlighting, contouring and more. You could even use these for the eyes, to lightly accentuate them with some highlighter in the inner corner, or a bit of brown shading in the crease to effortlessly enhance the eye.
Eyes
Following on from this, as far as eye makeup looks go, you may think you want to have every colour of the rainbow, and while this may be good once you developed a clientele and are doing a lot of looks, to start you’re probably best getting the most common colours. Think nudes such as browns, soft blacks and creamy colours, and of course some sparkly glitter eyeshadows! It may help to have a look at other popular MUA’s and the most common looks they’ve been creating recently. Buying some eyelashes in a wealth of sizes for different eye shapes is also a great idea, so that if your client wants to go that extra mile, you’re fully prepared for it.
Lips
Finally, build a good base of lipsticks and lip liners! An excellent way to build this quickly is with the use of lip palettes. This not only helps build up your collection quickly, but it also takes up less space than multiple lipsticks and it also helps when showing the client the shades you offer, as they can then see them all at one glance.
